Frequently Asked Questions

What is microsuction earwax removal?

Microsuction is a safe, gentle technique that uses a medical suction device to remove earwax under direct vision with an otoscope or microscope.

Is microsuction earwax removal safe?

Yes. It is considered one of the safest methods for earwax removal and is widely used by audiology and ENT services. As with any procedure, there may be minor risks, which will be discussed during your consultation.

Do I need to use ear drops before my appointment?

We have found that it certainly helps and advise that you do. If you have previously been told you have hard or impacted wax, using olive oil drops 2-3 times a-day for at least a week before your appointment can help.

Your clinician can advise based on your situation.

What happens during my appointment?

We begin with a short consultation and ear examination. If it’s safe and appropriate, microsuction will be performed immediately.

You’ll also receive advice on ear care going forward.

What if now wax is found?

If there’s no wax or it isn’t safe to proceed, you’ll be charged a reduced consultation fee. We’ll provide clear advice on next steps.

Can I get both ears treated?

Yes — both ears are checked during the same appointment and treated if needed.

How long does the appointment take?

Most appointments take 10–20 minutes, depending on the amount and consistency of the wax.

Do you offer home visits in my area?

We provide home earwax removal across Southampton postcodes SO14–SO19 and SO31. If you live nearby but outside these areas, contact us to check availability.

Is earwax removal covered by the NHS?

Many GP surgeries no longer offer earwax removal, or only provide irrigation. Our service is private and self-funded.

How much does earwax removal cost?

Our prices are fixed and transparent:
Clinic appointment: £60
Clinic consultation (no wax found): £20
Home visit: £80

Will earwax removal improve my hearing?

If your hearing loss is caused by earwax blockage, removal can make a noticeable difference. If your hearing issues persist, we recommend further assessment with an audiologist.

How often should I have earwax removed?

It varies — some people need it annually, others less often. Your clinician will give personalised advice.
